Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections on 13 January 2024 signal the start of a global super election year. The Délégation Culturelle et Économique de Taipei and the Swiss Democracy Foundation hosted this event to explore the peculiarities of Taiwanese politics and their regional and global implications.
Review of the briefing event
The event focused on Taiwanese politics and its global implications. Key discussions included the outcome of the parliamentary and presidential elections, the domestic and foreign policy implications, the diplomatic aspects and the differences between the One China principle (Beijing's approach to include Taiwan) and the One China policy (other countries' approach to have formal relations with China but not with Taiwan), its day-to-day implications and the US and Chinese stance on the status quo. Insights were shared into Taiwan's very well-developed electoral processes, its comprehensive use of modern direct democracy, and the external influences on the elections by foreign actors, predominantly from China. External factors, such as the economic situation in the region, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the situation in Hong Kong, were also discussed.
Special thanks to all speakers and participants!
