Welcome to Gaborone/Botswana

event and registration info

Gaborone, Botswana | 7–10 October 2026 | Indigenous. Resilient. Empowering.

Hosted in Southern Africa's longest-standing democracy, the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy 2026 invites you to explore democratic innovation through the lens of Botswana's political experience. Together with participants from around the world – including experts, practitioners, activists, and civil society actors – you will gather in Gaborone for four days of exchange, dialogue, and collaboration.

Through interactive workshops, panel discussions, and plenary debates, the forum creates space not only to reflect on the state of direct and participatory democracy, but to actively share ideas, experiences, and practical approaches. You are not just attending – you help shaping the conversation. Participants are encouraged to contribute their own perspectives and even propose formats or topics that matter to them, helping to shape the Global Forum itself.

Beyond the sessions, the programme includes side events and visits that offer a deeper sense of place. These moments open up opportunities to engage with Botswana's democratic traditions, connect with its people, and experience its culture – while building meaningful relationships with others at the forum.

This edition focuses on themes such as indigenous governance, current challenges to democracy, and the intersectioins between democratic practice and global issues like natural resource management, climate change, and regional integration.

If you have any questions on the Forum, please write to info@2026globalforum.com.

The forum's preparation team, led by former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi (far left), met in the fall of 2025 in Masisi's home village of Moshupa. Other members include (from left): Gladys Mokhava (coordinator of the host commitee and former Botswana ambassador to the UN in New York), Joe Mathews (editor-in-chief of Democracy Local, co-founder of the Global Forum), Bruno Kaufmann (Co-President and head of international cooperation at the Swiss Democracy Foundation, co-founder of the Global Forum), Caroline Vernaillen (coordinator of the International Consortium), Jung-ok Lee (former Minister for Gender Equality of South Korea), and Kaelo Molefhe (former Democracy Ambassador of Botswana).

2. Building strong institutions and making democracy more democratic

  • Constitutional reform and grassroots policy-making

You can read about the thematic focus we are aiming for in detail here. The Global Forum is not immune to the global funding pressures. In order to keep the conference free for those who want to attend, this year we'll have a simplified and streamlined programme that reduces the pressure on us as organisers. Unfortunately, this means we will select less sessions. The programme committee will give priority to those sessions taht align fully with the thematic focus set out and of course our overarching question of direct and participatory democracy.

We are open to proposals from anyone – scholars, election officials, journalists, activists, NGOs, governments of all levels, businesses, and everyday people.

Deadline: 31 May 2026
